Sven B. Schreiber (sbs) It's generally a good idea to play a Steve Cochrane album every now and then, because it always warms the heart and strokes the soul. I just love the inexhaustible peace, idealism, and human touch emanating from his music. "The Purest of Designs" is sort of an extremely delayed debut album, basically conceived as early as 1982, but waiting for its finalization until 15 years later. The long time it has undergone creation, refinement, and production makes it a remarkably flawless and mature album. Favorite track: When Music Speaks.

WHEN MUSIC SPEAKS I am the voice of a vision Seen clear across a span of years I am an architect of precision My design is the sound in your ears Listen to the sound of love A whisper in every note So pure and clear You should know that reason brought it here I am the god of my own existence Building my world in the image of Man Though I sometimes meet resistance I move ahead with a vision and a plan I want to know the truth I want to see it so radiantly clear Like the sky above me now And the promise in the silence I want to stand before honest men With my own view of the world And let my music say: "This is the way it could be" Music is the judge within It won't let compromise pass by Without imposing sentence In the courtroom of conscience Emotional response Reveals ones deepest philosophy And I aim for the sound of truth

THE MELTING SNOW Winter’s end is near There’s a new song in the air A child captures spring Imagination unfolding Before restless eyes And Man begins to rise In a search for greatness A seed of hope beneath the earth begins to grow A child’s spring is alive with the sight Of melting snow
4.
THE HOPEFUL SEED Plant a seed, watch it grow When it’s time, you will know Let it live, let it breathe Let it not be deceived And the seed frees your mind To receive the sun that shines Plant a seed in the earth It will be your vision’s birth Let it guide you on your way As you seek a better day Plant a seed, restless child Paint a vision, a beautiful world
5.
THE FLOWER Put your questions to the flower He is wise He has grown before your eyes To still the violent world around him Give him all your passion’s power Make him strong Give him beauty in your song Make sure you leave him where you found him Do be kind to the flower Every minute and every hour He is a symbol of your love He is a tribute to your life Tell you worries to the flower He is kind He will ease your troubled mind You’ll be at peace when you’re around him Don’t condemn an April shower It’s his blood He has blossomed from a bud Into the garden where you found him Do be kind to the flower Every minute and every hour He is a symbol of your love He is a tribute to your life
6.
THE DREADFUL WEED A lonely weed begs your pardon It only wants to invade your garden Armed with lies and shallow eyes He’s a weakness in you He’s the slightest compromise Now your painting is smeared with blood Beloved flower trampled in the mud Free your vision, let it shine Kill the weed and free your mind Kill the weed, it is time Break it’s hold on your mind Drain it’s blood, cut it’s root Crush it’s evil with your boot For the weed tears apart The living truth, the hopeful heart Kill the weed, it is time Break it’s hold on your mind Beauty cries beneath the force Nature strays from it’s course Kill the weed, it is time Kill the nuisance, stop this crime
7.
THE STORMS OF PASSION Storms of passion rage Like a play upon a stage There for all mankind To see this battle for a mind The weeds, they have one goal They would claim this fertile ground It’s spirit to be lost Never, ever to be found To think and to create And then be torn apart As it fails to comprehend The nature of it’s art The artist’s innocent mind Should be defended and defined To let it’s lifeblood flow To let this garden grow
8.
THE SCENT OF AFTER-RAIN Rain clouds pass us by As the sun reclaims the sky The artist has won the battle For the garden of his dreaming Art is a vision, not a mirror reflection It’s purpose: to present a picture Of a dream’s realization to perfection The dreamer now has courage He knows that it is possible To make his dreams come true Show us the world you’ve chosen Not the one we see Paint it as it ought to be Let the flowers grow free . . .

DREAMS OF REASON Winds of fear Could you blow out of my life for awhile? It's time for me to close my eyes And dream just like a child Of silver and gold horizons tomorrow A clear path ahead Let me lay my body down Upon the softness of my bed Isn't it dreams that paint a world With the purest of designs? Rising with new integrity To take the test of time Isn't it reason that shows the way To the things that deep inside We know are right? Fall asleep in darkness To envision a world full of light Real world Could you stay outside my door for awhile? I'll be back to meet you And to greet you with my smile I'll dream of children's laughter In the morning's velvet sun I'll create the morning after For the eyes of everyone   Isn't it dreams that paint a world With the purest of designs? Rising with new integrity You take the test of time Isn't it reason that shows the way To the things that deep inside We know are right? Fall asleep in darkness To envision a world full of light
